Our aim is not only to show you the magnificent Whales that migrate our waters but also to show you as much wild life as possible and today we did exactly that with 100's and 100's of dolphins, at least 50 seals, penguins swimming throughout the bay and the main attraction; 2 Humpback Whales on their journey north. The day was a day that just couldn’t get any better with perfect warm winter weather, calm waters and an ocean full of wildlife

A Southern Right whale and its calf and a Humpback were seen today. Just wide of Bowen Island a juvenile Humpback found time to play with a few of our Fur Seals and then come back across the middle of Jervis Bay. We then spotted the Southern Right Whale and its calf. A passive viewing but the customers were delighted to share the special moment.

Sunday 24 August 2008

A deep low pressure cell pushed large swells and storm force winds across the East Coast of NSW causing cancellation of all cruises on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday things settled down with mixed results. We were limited by the abating sea conditions and spent very little time at sea and unfortunately saw no whales. Clients were given our “free return cruise vouchers” and are welcome back another day soon. Better conditions forecast during the week ahead.

Fabulous! 5 humpbacks and dolphins under brilliant sunshine. Looks like we are in a for a really solid 'southern migration' with 5 whales seen today. We expect whale sighting to get thicker and more numerous as September, October and November approaches. Don't forget we can also expect to see Humpback mothers and their newborn babies INSIDE the calm waters of Jervis Bay in the coming weeks. A really special time for Jervis Bay Whales

Sunny skies and no wind made way for a lovely viewing of our first Mother and Calf, assuming the Southern Migration has started this will herald a slow and long procession of whales back past Jervis Bay. The mother escorted the calf to the 'Nursery' on the northern tip of Bowen Island where the calf found the energy to breach 3 times providing life long memories for our customers. Common dolphins and our resident bottlenose dolphins were also seen.

What more can you expect? A guard of honour of approx 15 Bottlenose Dolphins as we departed, then at Bowen Island, in excess of 150 Common Dolphins escorted us to 2 Juvenile Humpback Whales. Our passengers viewed simultaneous tail slapping then synchronised pectoral fin slapping. The highlight was the joint feeding frenzy of the common dolphins and the humpbacks feeding on what can be assumed to be 'bait balls'. The whales continued to lunge into the ball with the dolphins, continually changing direction and opening their huge mouths as our passengers watch with amazement. And just when you think its finished the Bottlenose Dolphins escorted us back safely into Huskisson

The whale watching cruise had a start great with a sighting of 2 whales at the heads of Jervis Bay. These particular whales proved to be very unsocial as we got closer and preformed a disappearing act on us. We then took off down South in search of some more social Humpbacks and hit the jack pot with 2 juveniles found near the Old Ruined Lighthouse. These whales where much more interactive and provided great viewing. We where also lucky enough to of seen quite a few common dolphin today.

Amazing and possibly Sad, today we had the delight of the company of a lone Humpback Calf. The calf was just wide of the Ruined Lighthouse. Our fear was that it was entangled in plastic, however on a closer look it was simply curiously looking at an 'orange blubber substance' that could be best described as a 'plastic bath matt'. The calf was keen to show off its skills, spy hopping several times and rolling around in the clear waters. Where was its mother? No sign of her. We hope not caught up in plastic, fishing nets. We wished it a safe journey South.

The 2008 Whale Season is here......

.......and if the 2007 season is any indication, we can look forward to even more whale sightings than ever before. Once again we have had an extremely busy summer season with Jervis Bay proving to be more popular that ever. The secret seems to be out that Jervis Bay and its Marine Park provide some the most natural and pristine backdrop allowing holiday makers to see our natural flora and fauna up close.

So, if you want to see the some of Australia's humpback whales up close, then make sure you are onboard the Spirit of Jervis Bay. We cruise more often to ensure that you get to see more whales on your trip. We have a 'whale guarantee' on all our whale cruises, and as the picture shows, when we find the whales, you will not be disappointed.

We look forward to seeing you on board 'The Spirit of Jervis Bay' in 2008.

Our spotters are already in place both inside and outside Jervis Bay and we will let you know as soon as we get our first sighting. We will commence our official whale watching season with our first cruise in mid May.

The 2007 Whale Season has unfortunately come to an end......

BUT WHAT ANOTHER GREAT SEASON IT WAS !

This was definitely our best season yet ... and our whale numbers show it ! On the northern migration we recorded 125 sightings. This was made up of 120 humpback whales, 2 southern right whales and 3 minke whales. On the return, southern migration, we recorded and amazing 430 sightings made up of 423 humpback whales, 4 pilot whales, 1 minke whale and 2 orca whales.

Once again we were extremely happy to see a big number of return customers, but also a lot of fresh new faces who were discovering both the whales and Jervis Bay for the first time. The word is continuing to spread that Jervis Bay offers some of the best whale viewing up and down the east coast of Australia.

Again the number of mothers and calves who took refuge right inside Jervis Bay on their long trip back south seems to be increasing and they seem to be staying longer. During the months of October and November we hardly had to leave the calm waters inside Jervis Bay to see the whales. The calm waters inside the bay seems to encourage the calves to show off their playful anitcs as they grow more confident and we were treated to many displays of breaching and tail slapping.

Whilst the whales are gone for another season, we hope that you can find time to visit us over the summer and see our resident dolphins in action amongst the pristine beauty of Jervis Bay. Visit us at DOLPHIN WATCH CRUISES ihe original cruise company in Jervis Bay and come on board The Spirit of Jervis Bay. We have been taking people out to see the dolphins and the scenery in Jervis Bay since 1990. We hope that you can join us over the summer and be sure to ask us about our SUMMER TWILIGHT BBQ CRUISES...... the best way to enjoy what the Bay has to offer !
